Please read below to learn more about dental implants.
A dental implant is like an artificial tooth root. Implants can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth. Implants are made of titanium alloy which is the same material used in artificial joints such as knees and hips. Implants are considered permanent and are intended to last many years and may last a lifetime.
If a tooth has been missing for many years, a dental implant may be placed right away. However, if a tooth must be removed from an area first, then the tissues must heal for a period of time (typically 3-4 months) before the area can receive an implant. In some cases, an area must receive a bone graft before an implant can be placed.
After the implant is placed, it must osseo-integrate (fuse) to the jawbone for a period of time (typically 2 months) before a crown can be attached to the implant. In order to make the crown for an implant, an impression must be taken. The impression and other materials are sent to our dental lab who will make the crown. On the last visit, the crown will be permanently attached to the implant.
Not every person is a good candidate for dental implants. If you have health conditions which effect bone healing, implants may not be the best option for you. People who use tobacco are also not good candidates for implants. In both cases, these conditions compromise the ability of your jaw bone to properly fuse with the implant. Ask Dr. Toole if an implant would be a good option for you.
